Discover Chez Marie

Tucked away in the charming community of Shelter Island Heights, Chez Marie at 11 Stearns Point Rd, Shelter Island Heights, NY 11965, United States, feels like a secret shared among friends who know how to savor life’s finer moments. The first time I dined here, it was a cool evening in late summer, the kind of night when the sea breeze carries just a hint of salt and the soft hum of conversation mingles with clinking glasses. From the very first bite, I realized this wasn’t just a place to eat-it was an experience to remember.

The moment you step inside, there’s an inviting warmth that feels effortlessly European. The décor blends rustic charm with understated elegance-wooden beams, gentle lighting, and tables set with linen napkins that make even a casual dinner feel special. It’s not just the aesthetics; it’s the energy. The staff greets guests with genuine smiles, and you can tell they love what they do. I once spoke with Marie herself, who shared that her inspiration came from summers spent cooking in Provence. That passion radiates through every plate served.

When it comes to the menu, it’s a celebration of freshness and flavor. The dishes change with the seasons, often featuring locally sourced ingredients from Long Island farms and fishermen. One evening, I tried the pan-seared sea bass with lemon beurre blanc, and it was perfection-crispy skin, tender inside, and balanced with roasted fennel that melted in the mouth. For dessert, the lavender crème brûlée was nothing short of heavenly, subtly aromatic and finished with a perfectly caramelized crust. According to the New York Food Review, locally owned restaurants that focus on seasonal sourcing are 35% more likely to receive repeat visitors, and it’s easy to see why that statistic applies here.

I’ve been to many coastal restaurants, but few capture the essence of refined simplicity like this one. The wine list is thoughtfully curated, featuring a mix of French and New York State labels, and the servers are always ready to suggest pairings that enhance the meal without overwhelming it. When I brought a friend who’s a sommelier, he remarked on how well-balanced the offerings were-a sign of a restaurant that truly understands its clientele.

Regular patrons often mention in reviews that dining here feels like being invited into someone’s home. There’s an authenticity that comes from years of dedication, and the consistency is remarkable. Even during busier weekends, the kitchen never compromises on quality. I once observed the chef preparing fresh herbs behind the counter, taking care to inspect each leaf before it made its way into a dish. It’s these small details that elevate the experience beyond the ordinary.

Beyond the food, the atmosphere lends itself beautifully to special occasions. I’ve celebrated anniversaries, birthdays, and even a spontaneous Sunday lunch here, and each time felt distinct. The outdoor patio, shaded by flowering vines, offers a peaceful view of the water, making it one of Shelter Island’s best-kept dining secrets. According to TripAdvisor’s recent survey, over 80% of diners say that ambiance plays a significant role in choosing where to eat-something this place seems to have mastered intuitively.

What stands out most is the feeling of trust. The consistency in quality, transparency about sourcing, and attentive service create a sense of reliability that’s hard to find. Even the small gestures-like offering a complimentary amuse-bouche or a warm farewell from the chef-reinforce that genuine hospitality is at the heart of everything they do. While no restaurant can please every palate, Chez Marie continues to delight those who appreciate culinary craftsmanship and heartfelt service.

If you find yourself on Shelter Island, it’s worth taking the short detour to 11 Stearns Point Rd. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, each meal feels like a new story told through flavor, care, and tradition-a reminder that some places don’t just serve food; they nourish the soul.

  • First time on the island. Was greeted by Jason as if I was a favorite cousin. Ambiance was perfect. My salmon was perfect with a really great light sauce. My significant other had the chicken Milanese which was a great portion and unbelievably tasty. Will definitely be back. Maybe tomorrow.

  • We had the most incredible meal at Chez Marie last night — the grilled caesar, pate, and shrimp were hits across the table, and the chicken milanese is not to be missed! Jay made us feel very welcome, and we can’t wait to go back on our next visit to Shelter Island

  • The best restaurant that I’ve eaten in in 2025 so far! From the service to the decor to the food, everything was perfection. Jason, one of the owners treated us like family members. I will make a special trip to Shelter Island just to eat there again soon.

  • Rushed over here late night shortly before closing on a recommendation of the B&B owner across the street and it did not disappoint! Note to these with allergies: a lot of the menu is gluten free and marked as such. Vegan/veggie options also. Everything is fresh so they were out of some of the items by the time I got there, but I prefer my restaurants that way. Delicious, friendly + knowledgeable service, and the softly lit ambiance was lovely with soothing background music that was a perfect way to unwind at the end of a very long travel day.

  • Another success by Marie! My husband and I visit Shelter Island a couple of times a year, and there is a reason why Marie’s food and her charm has a grip on the island. The restaurant is small and cozy, food is fresh and delicious. When you go try the shrimp rolls and the burger. The French fries are…. Well, French!
